Draught Proofing

To 'draught proof' or renew with double-glazed timber sashes?

That is the question.

x

Draught proofing is a relatively modern trend that has taken the old sash windows refurb game by storm. Whether such widely applied draught busting enterprise proves to exploit a gap in the market or simply take advantage of well-meaning home-owners seeking the cheap option is probably best answered by those who have found their hard-earned investment achieved very little thermal improvement as most of the unforgiving cold continues to penetrate through the single-glazed sashes. Such an ineffectual waste of 'money for old rope' should perhaps be better acclaimed as "daft proofing".

x

If your windows have seen better days, the time and expense to properly refurbish worn out sashes proves economically unviable. It is clearly more cost effective to replace dilapidated sashes with new double-glazed sashes that will operate smoothly, close nice and snug, and create a comfortable living space for years. That is the practical, most attractive solution that achieves value for money.

x

If the box frames are in good condition, new double-glazed sashes can be fitted into the existing frame. This solution offers considerable saving with far less disruption to your decor.  However, in some cases, it is evident that the entire frame needs replacing.  Yes, it is an option requiring more expense, but the result is stunning. Complete replacement absolutely transforms the look of the property inside and out. To view some of my installations local to your home will confirm the beauty of this spectacular transformation in an instant.

x

Upon closer inspection, it will aslo become apparent that it is not by accident that my windows show such a superb finish. It is a hard won quality that reflects an "I can be bothered" approach that is rarely equalled by the "time is money" mentality of the sub-contractor. You would be hard pressed to find a selection of glass paper in a window fitter's tool box. What! Spend hours hand-sanding all the sharp edges of every timber profile to create a softer natural look?

x

"Sorry, mate . . . ain't got time for that!"

x

What's more, will the scrupulous fitter preserve, knot, prime and undercoat all the timber sashes, beads, and frames prior to installation?

x

No. For the 'job and knock' installer of unashamed mediocrity, it's too time-consuming to give attention to the many hidden details that produce a much better finish. But surely he will punch, fill and neatly rub down all the nail holes, clean up all the beadings and mitre joints, then give the whole job including the new architrave and cill another coat of Dulux to create a stunning finish, Yes?

x

    "Sorry luv, hehehe . . . that's the painter's job, init."

x

To underplay the superior quality of my work would be disingenuous, not simply because I take pride in my craft, but because I would be embarrassed to leave my windows in the substandard finish that, sadly, is the norm for what passes as British workmanship nowadays. And while inferior sash windows badly installed is a more or less price driven equation, it's regretfully true to say, the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

x

The relationship I have with my customers is one of mutual gratitude. I am grateful for their trust in placing an order with me - often recommendation - they are relieved and genuinely pleased that they got what was promised: a first class job with "a really lovely finish".  Everybody's happy.  I get paid, the customer gets value for money, and that's good business.
